Betty Jean (Wilson) Thorne

April 18, 2017

Mrs. Betty Jean Wilson Thorne

Betty Jean Wilson Thorne passed away peacefully at Wesley Woods Towers in Atlanta on April 18, 2017, at the age of 89.  Betty was blessed with many years of good health but has experienced decline in recent months due to kidney disease and died of related complications.  She was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-six years, Virgle Ray Thorne, parents, Barney James and Ruby Ansley Wilson, and brother, William (“Billy”) Bartow Wilson.  She is survived by daughter Jeanne Thorne Brissett (son-in-law Michael Brissett), daughter Patricia Thorne Brunner, five grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, two nieces, two nephews, and several cousins.

Betty was born in 1927 in Boneville, Georgia.  She grew up and happily lived almost her entire adult life in Boneville, with her daughter Patricia nearby, until moving to Wesley Woods Towers senior residence in Atlanta in 2014.  There she was near her daughter and son-in-law (Jeanne and Mike), granddaughter (Shelly Fulbright), and grandson (Zachary Brissett).  Betty graduated from Thomson High School in 1944.  A loving daughter and homebody, she spent all of one week at Rhinehart College before returning home and beginning her career at Augusta Arsenal.  She later worked for many years in Civilian Personnel at Fort Gordon, retiring from there in the 1970’s

Betty was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and was known by family and friends for her sweet demeanor and unassuming ways.  She was a keen follower for the news and politics and was quite the crossword puzzle whiz until her eyesight declined.  Betty was also known for her organizational skills, taking excellent care of the bookkeeping from the family and for Virgle’s cattle breeding business.

Betty placed faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior when she was nine years old.  For many years she was active at Boneville United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for several years.  Betty passed away trusting in Jesus’ promise of eternal life.
