R. Wayne Cowart, 79, left on the Glory Train bound for Heaven at 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, July 1 to meet His Master after suffering a stroke earlier that morning.  Wayne was the only son of the late Homer and Ella May Cowart of Sandersville, Georgia.  Wayne was a 1957 graduate of Sandersville High School, but had lived in Thomson, Georgia for thirty-five years.

Wayne was a Railroad Man for 42 years with the last 25 years as an engineer.  Wayne was a member of First Baptist Church of Thomson, where he was a member of the Men’s Bible Sunday School Class.  Wayne was a member of the A. J. Miller Masonic Lodge #204 in Thomson and a former member of the Thomson Shrine Club and Alee Shriners in Savannah.

Wayne was a faithful, committed husband of 60 years to his wife, Frances McDaniel Cowart of Thomson.  Together, they raised four children:  Peggy Etterle (Brian) of Thomson; Lisa Brodhecker (Mike) of Martinez; Robbie Cowart (Becky) of Rincon, Georgia; and Amy Johnston (Lester) of Washington.  Their children provided twelve grandchildren as well as seven great-grandchildren.

Wayne is also survived by his sister Bobbie Cowart Shuster of Albemarle, North Carolina and his brother-in-law Bill Berger of Chicago, Illinois, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his sisters Bettye Cowart Works and Jeanette “Net” Cowart Berger of Chicago, Illinois and an infant daughter Sarah Ellen Cowart.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Thomson with Dr. Matt Ward and Dr. Leonard Dupree officiating.  Pallbearers will be nephews, with honorary pallbearers being retired railroad employees, Masons, and the Men’s Bible Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church.  Interment will follow in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens with Masonic Rites.  Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at Curtis Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Go and Tell Fund at First Baptist Church, 253 Jackson Street, P.O. Box 1205, Thomson, Georgia  30824.
