Martha Hunt Norris Baston Obituary

Thomson, GA---Martha Hunt Norris Baston went to be with her Heavenly Father on April 13, 2024.

Originally from Thomson, Ga, she most recently resided in Gainesville, Georgia to be close to her immediate family. For the past 25 years, Martha was lovingly known as “Dah”. A term of endearment given to her by her grandchildren. Martha was preceded in death by parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mell (Lollie Hunt) Norris, and brothers, James, Bill, Jack and Cup Norris. She married her childhood sweetheart, John David Baston, Jr (Jack). They were married for 56 years until his death in 2008.

Martha graduated from Georgia State College for Women with a degree in Home Economics. She taught High School for 35 years. During her teaching tenure, she sponsored many chapters of the Future Homemakers of America. Her local chapter was the largest in the US with over 500 members. She was affectionally known as “Mother Martha” and was influential over many students’ lives.

“Dah” would always come at the drop of a hat to Gainesville to take care of Caroline and John. She would come armed with frozen casseroles, pound cake, “Dah bread” and her infamous Red Velvet Cake! She loved her grandchildren dearly and they loved her back just as fiercely. Her next love was for the Georgia Bulldogs. She loved a good tailgate and listening to Larry Munson through her Walkman while watching the Dogs play. One did not chat with Martha while she was watching the Bulldogs! Martha was an active member of the First Methodist of Thomson, Ga, and a member of the Joy Sunday School Class.

She is survived by her son, John David Baston, III and daughter-in-law Karen Walls Baston, her two very special grandchildren, Caroline Elizabeth Baston and John David Baston, IV of Gainesville, GA. and a very special person in her life, Patsy Russell.
