Mary Ellen (Spires) Snyder

On Friday, August 17, 2018, Mary Ellen Snyder, loving mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, passed away at her residence at the age of 90. Mary was born November 28, 1927, in Aiken SC, to Annie Lee and Eugene Spires. Mary Ellen married John Snyder in 1943 and moved to Washington, DC, and then Virginia where she raised seven children. Later she returned to the south to be close to her mother, sisters, and brother.

Mary Ellen enjoyed her daily crossword puzzle even in her final days and, before her eyesight faded, was an avid reader. She enjoyed mysteries and old TV shows like Perry Mason and Andy Griffith, and loved the Lord. Mary also loved her beautiful red birds. No amount of correction could get her to call them Cardinals, and the family gave up years ago.

Mary was a gracious southern lady with a strength that belied her soft voice and gentle nature. Rest in peace beautiful soul. You are home.

Preceded in death by husband, John, and daughter Patricia Snyder, Mary is survived by her son, John Snyder, Jr., and daughters Peggy Fox, Brenda Pierson (Kail), Mary Wisker (Henk), Marsha Shanahan, Rebecca Westenberger (Rob), sisters Betty McDonald and Audrey Stacy, and numerous grand and great grandchildren.

Visitation at Curtis Funeral Home, Thomson, on Wednesday, August 22, from 6-8 pm, and service at Loco Baptist Church, Lincolnton, on Thursday, August 23, at 11 am.
