Carson, who came to age in the height of the Elvis Presley era, was well known for his perfected pompadour, football abilities, and even voted in high school most likely to be Elvis just before joining the Army with his long time best friend Jimmy Fry and heading to serve in Korea. “Bob” as he came to be known in the military, became fast friends with Ron Hickman of Thomson while stationed there. He had no idea that this friendship would foreshadow his family settlement in the Thomson area.
While stationed at Fort Gordon, Bob met the love of his life, Pat Burgess, in a convertible on Broad St. in Augusta. The first date to Luigi’s soon took place, and they would be married 6 months later. Soon after the wedding his lovely southern bride reluctantly agreed to move with him back to New Jersey where they built a most cherished life with their own little family, extended with relatives, great friends, and so many nice things.
In the mid 70s Jesus revealed himself to Bob in a very real and profound way. Jesus called on Bob’s life. Bob’s response was nothing short of full submission, surrender, obedience, and faith pretty much from that day forward. A response that would completely change the trajectory of Bob’s new little family that by now was 80% yankee.
The Lord called on Bob to list his house for sale...the Lord gave him the amount...and to move to Georgia to begin a ministry and open a Christian bookstore. God sold the house. Bob’s life of service began, along with Pat’s as she trusted his calling, through the Christian Bookstore (that Pat would eventually run) to being director of Child Evangelism Fellowship with his first Backyard Bible Clubs, leading as pastor at Salem Methodist Church for 17 years, serving as an elder in the Presbyterian church for many years as well as teaching many Sunday school classes and working with many youth programs.
Bob also worked for the City of Thomson for 30+ years where he befriended, mentored and loved on many people in different stages of their lives while living his life as an example worth emulating. Many of the City workers still call him Uncle Bob to this day.
While many of Bob’s life decisions may have made no sense to onlookers, and even participants at the time, a full reflection of his life choices as directed by God wove a beautiful life story of a good and selfless hardworking man who loved his family well and emphatically trusted a faithful God for eternal joy, peace, love, and life and shared Him with others. Well done, Big Eick!
“His master replied well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your Masters happiness!” Matthew 25:2
The things he loved the most... his precious wife, the Saving Grace of Jesus, Studying his Bible, spending time with his family, “his deer” and working his land, retaining and passing on the homemade raviola New Year’s tradition, “something good to eat”, good company, hunting and fishing, traveling with his family.
