Charles "Chuck" Hampton Burks, Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 27, 2024, in Thomson, GA. Born on November 21, 1943, in Savannah, GA, he was the cherished son of May Beall Yancey Burks and Charles Hampton Burks, Sr., both of whom preceded him in death.
A proud resident of Thomson for many years, Chuck is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Wanda; their two daughters, Jane (David) Pies of Black Mountain, NC, and Beth (Craig) Norris of Thomson; his beloved granddaughter, Bailey Norris; and his sisters, Barbara "Biff" (Milton) Petty of Woodstock, GA and Jane "Skeetie" Friedlin of Jacksonville, FL. He loved his family and was a constant source of strength and support in their lives.
Chuck shared a special bond with his granddaughter, Bailey. He found joy in every moment with her, doted on her, and took great pride in being her grandfather.
Chuck was a man of many skills and interests. A talented drummer, he played throughout his school years. In his free time, he pursued a variety of hobbies that reflected his creative spirit. He enjoyed drawing, painting, sculpting stone figures, and carving wood art.
A lifelong learner, Chuck had a deep passion for history and architecture, with a special interest in Native American culture and ancient numismatics. He often spent weekends hunting for fossils, shark teeth, gems and minerals, embracing the beauty of nature. He was also an avid golfer who always looked forward to watching the Masters.
Chuck was known for his intelligence, creativity, and generosity-though he always had a knack for pinching a penny! He had a clever sense of humor and was fiercely loyal to his loved ones. A faithful Christian, he held a deep love for his country and supported American troops throughout his life.
Chuck will be remembered for his unwavering love for family, his vibrant spirit, and the joy he brought to those around him. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A graveside service, officiated by Rev. Mike Dann, will take place on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Westview Cemetery in Thomson.
