George W. "Sonny" Poss Obituary

Thomson - Sonny died Friday night, January 22, 2021. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Pratt Poss; mother, Ila Mae Poss; father, Edward Cicero Poss; brothers, Varnell Poss and Dexter Poss; and sister, Betty Jean Gunby.

Sonny was born in Augusta, Ga. and raised in Thomson. He was a 1955 graduate of Thomson High School. He attended the University of Georgia on  Scholarship in basketball, track and swimming, where he earned 9 letters. He was Southeastern Conference Athlete of the Year in 1958 and 1959. After graduating UGA, he taught at Butler High School in Augusta, beginning in 1960, where he was head Basketball Coach and Athletic Director until his retirement.

He is survived by many special nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

His beloved wife, Anne, passed away in 2019 and a dual graveside service for both of them will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, January 30, 2021, in Westview Cemetery, with Rev Ronny Brannen officiating. Due to the covid-19 pandemic, face masks and social distancing will be observed. There will be no visitation.
