Martha "Lynn" Carithers Obituary

Martha “Lynn” Carithers, 79, died in her home in Thomson, Georgia, on November 23, 2025.

In her own words (mostly): “Lynn was born on August 16, 1946, in Athens, Georgia, to Herschel and Karen Carithers.  She began her formal education at Barrow Elementary School where she was a fearless Barrow School Brownie.  A proud graduate of Athens High School, Lynn was noted as an aggressive basketball player who fouled out during the first quarter of every game for four years.  Always ready with a joke or story, Lynn was selected by her classmates as “The Wittiest,” a distinction she shared with her dear friend Johnny Edmondo Steadmondo.  Can you imagine?  Lynn also graduated from the University of Georgia, where she was a member and Herald of the Chi Omega sorority.

After college, Lynn was employed by Delta Airlines in Atlanta, retiring after thirty years of service.  Years of volunteering followed, including at the Atlanta Botanical Garden and at Wesleyan College in Macon, where she taught golf to scores of young women.  Her retirement years also included lots of golf with her Delta and Atlanta friends, and she took great delight in offering tips on how they could be as good as she was.

Lynn is survived by her brothers, Dwight Carithers (Aletha) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Bucky Carithers of Athens and Lake Hartwell, along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, all of whom she loved dearly. She includes among her survivors, too, all the wonderful friends, especially Ruthie Knox, who helped keep her going during the many medical challenges of the past nine years.”

Those friends would add to Lynn’s own words that she also was an accomplished artist, with both paint and plants, and the beauty she created will continue to remind us of the many talents she shared so freely.  She loved to fish, loved to travel, and was always up for an adventure.  She was funny, warm, devoted, spirited, and brave.  To Lynn, being alive was a gift from God, and she did not waste a minute.

A celebration of Lynn’s life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Athens First United Methodist Church,327 North Lumpkin Street, Athens, Ga. 30601, with burial to follow in Oconee Hill Cemetery, 297 Cemetery Road, Athens, Georgia 30605, followed by a reception and visitation at the Oconee Hill Sexton's House. Reverend Dr. Sargent R. Nelson will officiate.  She asked that memorials be made to the Friends of Oconee Hill Cemetery (Post Office Box 49219, Athens, Ga 30604) or to her church, New Thomson United Methodist Church (Post Office Box 221, Thomson, GA 30824).  In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree.
