Augusta - Floyd Thomas "Tom" Ulmer Jr., age 81, passed away Friday, March 20, 2026 in Augusta, Georgia. He was born in Elloree, South Carolina on April 10, 1944 to Floyd Thomas "Jack" Ulmer Sr. and Pauline Merritt Ulmer. He attended Elloree High School, where he excelled at academics and athletics, including starting at fullback for the football team. Pursuing an interest in science, he graduated from the University of South Carolina, majoring in biology. He was a lifelong fan of the Gamecocks, especially football and the men's and women's basketball teams.

Shortly thereafter, he started his career at the Medical College of Georgia, where he became the director of the Rheumatology Lab, blending clinical oversight and scientific research.
Outside of his professional work, he continued to enjoy athletics, especially golf and tennis, particularly at Newman Tennis Center in Augusta. He also loved music, a passion inspired by his mother, a long-time music teacher. This included singing in the Chancel Choir at Grace United Methodist Church in North Augusta. At home, he was a lifelong builder who continually enjoyed finding new projects and planning for the future.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jacqueline Martin of Havertown, Pennsylvania. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Michael Ulmer of Atlanta, Georgia and Thomas Ulmer of Greer, South Carolina, as well as his grandson, Charles Ulmer.
